EBTB Popcorn
My dad loves granulated garlic. My sister would put red pepper flakes on a shoe. But, arguably, the most widely used seasoning of the 21st century is the iconic bagel seasoning. It has proven to be versatile as it’s been used on anything other than Brooklyn bagels. From broiled salmon to avocado toast, everything but the bagel seasoning makes masterpieces from blank slates- and popcorn is just another example.
I’m a late night snacker. I usually go for one of my chocolate covered stuffed dates or just a handful of dark chocolate chips, but if I’m craving something savory, I’m reaching for popcorn. I’m a purist. I put dry kernels in a bowl in the microwave for plain air-popped, or the sea salt brand in a bag. That’s it. But, something intrigued me about everything bagel-inspired popcorn. EBTB popcorn is a break from the caramel and white cheddar versions. Seeds and kernels stuck in your teeth act as a second snack for later.
What is EBTB (Everything But the Bagel) Seasoning?
Everything But the Bagel Seasoning is a combination of:
Sesame Seeds
Black Sesame Seeds
Sea Salt Flakes
Dried Minced Garlic
Dried Minced Onion
Poppy Seeds
If you don’t have this seasoning blend, you can absolutely make your own. Add these ingredients to a jar and shake together.
How do I make Popcorn?
There are three methods of making popcorn:
Stovetop:
In a heavy bottom pot, heat 1 Tbsp of neutral oil over medium heat. Drop one kernel to test to see if the oil is hot enough. If it sizzles and pops, take out that kernel and pour ¼ cup-⅓ cup popcorn kernels into the pop. Cover and give the pot an occasional shake. When you start to hear popping, keep shaking the pot over the heat until you cannot hear any more popping. Remove from the heat and wait about 10 seconds to uncover the pot to ensure no kernels pop out of the pot.
Microwave:
Pour about ¼ cup-⅓ cup of kernels in a microwave safe popcorn bowl or glass bowl. Cover and place in the microwave on the “Popcorn” button. Listen for popping- once it stops popping, cancel the rest of the time and remove from the microwave.
Bagged
Let’s be honest: nothing can beat the convenience of opening a bag of perfectly salted, pre-popped popcorn.
How long does it take to make EBTB Popcorn?
While someone else is choosing the movie to watch, you can get this together in the kitchen. While the popcorn is popping, melt the butter and get your seasonings ready to sprinkle.
1. Prepare your popcorn.
2. In a large bowl or large paper bag, add popcorn, melted butter, and seasonings. Toss or shake to coat.
Serve.
